Outsource Ten Managing Director Brett Heyes Pays Tribute to Steve Jobs

November 20, 2011

Outsource Ten, Managing Director Brett Heyes is a true Apple fan and this week pays tribute to the man responsible for revolutionising computing and the lives of millions of people around the world.

Steve Jobs lost his battle against pancreatic cancer this month and left behind one of the most recognisable brands accross the world.

His company Apple has been responsible for leading the way in innovation in computing, branching out further afield into mp3 players, Mobile phones PDA’s but more recently completely dominating the tablet computer market with the iPad.

Brett Heyes Speaks on his Favourite Apps

Brett Heyes life is just one of those that has been enhanced since making the switch from PC to Mac about a year ago.Not only have Apple become one of the most iconis brands on the planet, but the platform has allowed other businesses to integrate and help in business and in pleasure with professional looking and sometimes addictive apps from Apple’s App Store.

We asked Brett Heyes to rate his favourite apps for business and this is what he told us.

OSX Lion.
“With over 200 extra features, I’ve found the launchpad to be the most uselful. It’s ease of use allows me to pick an app quickly and effectively and has the feel of the iPhone and iPad. Mail has also changed and now I can access my favourite folders with a click or swipe- whichever I feel like using at the time”

Keynote
” This app has really helped me to give my Business a professional look with respect to Branding. I especially enjoy it’s compatibality with my iPhone or iPad should I need to control presentations from a distance. My slide-shows look, feel and deliver my Branding with total ease”

Numbers
“Mac’s version of Excel has made reporting (usually a chore) a breeze. Save options allow me to send my reports as Excel documents which allows my business partners to read my reports instanly without having to convert to Excel first.”

Mailings
“I love this app. It basically lets me email the same email to everyone on my mailing list and even lets me personalise each message.”

Next we posed the question of personal apps and Brett’s comments were as follows.

Angry Birds
“By far the most appealing games app on the market. It has a simple format but what I love most is the story of the company. It tells of determination, attitude, big thinkers and a couple of guys with unbelievable belief in themselves and their product. It also has one basic message once a stage has been completed. You either complete or fail the level. Tell me fail and see what happens”

Flixster for iPad & iPhone
“This app tells me what is on at the box office and will even tell me the know the closest cinema to my current location. I can even view trailers for movies before I decide”

Around Me
“If ever there was an allround genius app, then this is the one. If I’m in a strange city on business, I can access anything from a restaurant to taxi, parking to pharmacy and even supermarkets and ATM’s”

It seems that the ease of use of these apps is the main appeal for consumers like Brett Heyes but more than that the fact that they are all available in the world most successful App store not only makes great business sense but puts the world in the palm of your hands, whether it be an iPhone, iPad or Macbook.

Brett’s final comment probably sums up the feelings he has for Steve Jobs and Apple. “They may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but Steve Jobs and Apple have provided a platform for anyone with the right product to become successful. It will be a long time before someone as remarkable as Steve Jobs comes around to make the same sort of impact. I will do my bit by supporting Apple for years to come”

Easy Apple Strudel

This is my favourite advert on TV at the moment. I mean, how easy does it look to make an Apple Strudel from this advert. Now I’m no expert in the kitchen but how hard can it be. I’m going to put it to the test. First I’ll need a reliable recipe. Although Marks n Spencer mention some of the ingredients, I’m sure they have conveniently omitted a few. My research revealed the following are needed.

Bramley apples
Rum soaked raisins
Lemon zest
Castor sugar
Nutmeg
Brown sugar
Filo Pastry (Flour water salt and patience)
Butter
Icing sugar for dusting

I’ve decided to buy the ready made version of the Filo Pastry after trying my hand at the homemade type. Told you- no expert. The rest is fairly simple. And the result……. Less than fantastic. What I realise is that without vital ingredients, its just not that simple. I should have listened to the end of the advert more closely where they say “…or make life easy with the ultimate apple strudel from the M n S dessert menu……”

Now as usual I seem to be going off on a tangent and as usual I will now provide the method behind my madness and relate this to some good sound Startup Advise.

If we were to make an advert Marks n Spencer esq, it would sound something like this. “How to start the perfect Outsource Business using sound business advice naturally but also experience and a little investment. Start by writing a business plan. Write and rewrite until it is perfectly laid out. Simplify and add a mission statement. Ever so carefully, spread your investment across  the various functions and finally dust with a little hard work until it stabilises. Watch it develop into a profitable, manageable enterprise”.

Sound easy and should be but we would conveniently leave out the vital functions that are involved in running a business.

Before you go out and start up a new business consider the following functions needed to minimise the risk. You will need the following:

Legal support
Admin processing
Accounting
Business development
Marketing
Public relations
Banking
Experience
Original idea

Now as long as you have expertise in all of the above functions, you’re headed in the right direction. Or just find a package deal where all you have enough time to deliver customers daily and provide necessary training for business partners.

In short, i can go through the effort of making my own mediocre Apple Strudel or I can run down to my local M n S and buy one with less effort. The same applies to Business Startups.

NFL Draft Pick- Brett Heyes Becomes the Student

I couldn’t resist this one. NFL, the most watched sport on the planet (or at least the planet of the USA). I love americans, hence the move to New York next year and as a sports fanatic I relish the opportunity to learn and understand a sport that in the eyes of the American Public is the holy grail in life and even in business.

This week end I’ll be watching the Chicago Bears v Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sky Sports with a bowl of Nachos and a six pack of Bud in true American style. I’m hoping that the last 20 years of sports viewing has given me enough experience to understand the majority of the rules however, I’m sure I’m gonna need some help.

This is what I understand about the sport so far:

They have a Draft pick at the beginning of the year. The NFL use College Football as their main stream of recruitment on a yearly basis and the idea in a nutshell is to pick the most eligible players in College Football league and then pick them to play in their teams for the coming season. The worst team in the league chooses first or swaps a position and so on until the picks are made.

They cap salaries in the league (in 2010 the League owners opted out of the CPA) to ensure that the wealth doesn’t get out of hand which also keep the sport a sport and not just about money. I’m sure they have their own Carlos Tevez type players who get paid too much but let’s see how many times one of them refuses to play because they are not ‘mentally prepared’.

So let’s get down to the format. 32 teams, 2 conferences 4 divisions per conference, 4 games pre-season, 16 games regular season, 12 team playoffs and 2 team Superbowl. This year will be the Superbowl XLVI/ Superbowl 46. Simple so far.

Next the rules- this is where I’ll stop because I’m clueless. I guess I’ll just have to choose a team and watch more games. Now before I get accused of ‘Glory Supporting’, I have no choice in this case. In the case of Manchester United, I have been supporting them since I was 5 years old which is more like ‘Lifetime Supporter’.

That’s my take on the NFL- as long as it’s competitive, I’m watching. Throw in some beer and nachos and I’m all over it. Enjoy, I know I will.

My One Step Secret to Success

When asked about what has brought me success over the years, I usually think of an over elaborate explanation of how I managed to work my way through the ranks more by who I knew and how I worked my way into successful positions and how it’s not about what you know but about who you know.

When setting up my own company I realised that as easy a solution it seems, giving preference to people just because of who they know really doesn’t bring out the best in people especially if results determine your success.

I’v managed over the years to narrow it down to 1 basic step. Before I tell you my secret I’ll tell you a story that best describes it.

I moved into Manchester in 2005 in search of a simpler life to London. I was after a fresh challenge and need less of a hustle and bustle that London provided for me for over 6 years. I had booked myself  a couple of interviews a couple of days apart and was staying in Fallowfield. The morning of my first interview I went through my usual preparation of shower, shave and shampoo. Put on a purple ‘power tie’. got a spare copy of my CV ready in case my interviewer has misplaced the one I sent. Had myself a healthy breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and honey followed by a cup of coffee and set off for my interview.

Due to a lack of knowledge about Manchester and it’s traffic I decided to catch a bus in to town. After waiting around 10 minutes for a bus, one arrives and I jump on in a good mood, ready to take on the world only to the welcome of the most miserable face I have ever seen in my life. The response to my ‘Hi How are you?’ was met by half a nod and some sort of grunt as if to say “Who the F^&* are you to be so happy?” Never the less I needed this person’s help so I ignored the reaction and proceeded to explain that I was a first time traveller to Manchester and had very little idea of where I was headed and politely asked for a shout out as soon as we arrived at my stop. the response was predictably the same as the first one as if to say “Sure, if I have to….”

Forty five minutes later I realised that we had to have at least come close to our destination. I politely enquired to ‘Mr Grumpylocks’ to which the answer predictably was “We’ve passes it mate”

Unsurprised at my answer I jumped off and managed to find my way back just in time for my interview.

Day 2, Interview 2

Same setup, same positive start, same request. Different driver. Here was his response.

“First time in Manchester mate. You’re in for a treat. Please take a seat”

My guided tour took me through the main student area, past the Cheshire Cat Pub, the Curry Mile, the Student Union, the Royal Infirmary, the Palace Hotel, Billy Rox Nightclub and finally to my stop on Piccadilly. I was left with a smile and a wish of luck with my interview.

If by now you haven’t guessed it. My 1 Step Secret to Success is this.

We all wake up with a choice. Either we wake up with a good attitude or we don’t.

For me attitude is the ‘ability to have people want to deal with you on a day to day basis.

Compete Like Will Smith

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been trying to figure out what most characteristics successful people have in common. I’ve researched google and followed people like, Robert Kyosaki, Will Smith, Anthony Robbins and Simon Sinek to name a few. In the end it seems that people who have a competitive spirit seem to rise above everyone else no matter what environment they play in. I have added a link to a Youtube clip of Will Smith who at this moment in time has earned more in Hollywood than anyone else EVER.

I hope you enjoy it.

Here’s a Quick Way to Get to Know Brett Heyes

My working life started at 14 years old in a local grocery store where I quickly became aware that nothing in life was ever going to come my way unless I took full charge and control of it.
I spent my school years working part time in a number of customer facing roles in everything from grocery stores to restaurants, health clubs and garden centers.
During this time I tried my hand at all school sports including football, field hockey, athletics and tennis. It wasn’t until I tried my hand at Duathlon (running and cycling) that I found my true sporting strength. I worked hard enough with my new found talent to qualify for selection into the South African National Duathlon Team for Juniors and was lucky enough to compete in two world championships in Hobart, Tasmania and Cancun, Mexico rating amongst the top 30 juniors in the world at the time.
At this point, I made the decision to retire from competitive sport and move into the workplace full time.
My first real experience in full time employment took me into a foreign exchange office in Cape Town, South Africa where I found my self involved in everyday customer interaction as well as general administration within a small team in a tourist district. I learnt how foreign exchange worked including insight into international foreign exchange patterns. My true calling however lay elsewhere and again I was off onto my next challenge.
Up to this point I had limited experience in hospitality which I used to sell myself as a junior manager in coffee shop/ business lounge in a high street location. At this point pressure mounted to help turn an underperforming unit into a profitable one. This was done in little under a year. One day an opportunity arose to travel to Europe to start a fresh journey.
London was to become my destination of choice (as it is for many South Africans). My six years experience was to prove pivotal to me in my future career choices. Day one to three involved me, a cv and a desire to survive. Armed with no UK experience, no qualification and a hand full of pounds, it became evident that I was going to have to sell myself more than ever. My first position was as a busboy in ‘Marco Pierre White’s’ Titanic in the heart of London’s West End. Over the next four years I managed, once again, through hard work and dedication ,to be promoted to General Manager at ‘Mark Fuller’s’ Embassy Bar & Grill in Mayfair, London. My experiences in London taught me that once I had worked and achieved a Management role , my movements were largely restricted and controlled by my employers, which at the time suited me just fine. It wasn’t till one day when I asked for yet another 3% pay rise and was told in no uncertain terms that my position was not as stable as I originally thought, that I realized that control was my only goal. I had to have all of it if I was to become seriously successful.
My decision to become self employed effectively meant that I had to give up so called ‘job security’ and a guaranteed paycheck and replace it with performance related earnings. At this point I set out to prove my worth and was rewarded in 2008 with my very own company. Outsource Ten.
Enter Outsource Marketing. If I was to give anyone any advice on how to successfully set up and run an Outsourcing company, it would be this. Make sure that you have the necessary desire to do so no matter what (this is without a doubt a a challenging environment). Next make sure that the support you have is unconditional to avoid having to chase clients or customers. Find a place where it is cost effective to set up and a client that won’t make you chase for money. Education is power and I’m not talking about the piece of paper you get when you graduate from a university course, I mean become an expert in the field of Outsource Sales and make yourself aware of the environment you are entering before you enter it.
All you need now are people around you that enhance the process. Avoid at all cost anything or anyone that may cause distraction. In economic times such as these, it has never been more important to focus on the prize and deliver on your goals and objectives. This will ensure you and your company become future proof. The rest will become your story one day. This is mine. Join the ride.
